Biography:
Yuan Shu was a prominent figure during the late Han dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, featured in the historical novel *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*. A distant relative of the Han imperial family and younger half-brother of Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu possessed considerable influence due to his lineage and wealth.
He initially participated in the coalition against Dong Zhuo, establishing his own power base in the Jianghuai region. Ambitious and increasingly arrogant, Yuan Shu declared himself emperor of the Cheng dynasty in 197 AD, a move considered treasonous and politically disastrous.
This act alienated many of his allies, including Sun Ce, and brought him into direct conflict with Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Lü Bu. Yuan Shu's self-proclaimed dynasty was short-lived. He suffered numerous defeats and died soon after, a disillusioned and broken man, attempting to flee north to join his brother.
In *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, Yuan Shu is portrayed as a pompous, incompetent, and ultimately self-destructive character, highlighting the dangers of unchecked ambition and hubris.
